Mediaplanet: Why is understanding your DNA so important?

dnaPower brochure and swab

Dr. Lois Nahirney: DNA is your personal biological blueprint. It provides the design for your body and health. We now have the unique ability through DNA testing to see where the genetic design is strong and where it may be weak. Your genes are greatly influenced by diet and exercise, which means the changes you make can have a huge impact on your long-term health. In a new era of quantified self and health, you can take power over your health by learning your DNA. A DNA test can give you information to live according to your genetic makeup, so that you can make better decisions to stay healthy and live longer.

What sort of genes do you look at?

We look at over 70 areas of genetic markers and variations that impact everyday health —- areas of diet such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, gluten, lactose, sugar, salt, and vitamins. We also look at key markers that regulate hormones, detoxification, inflammation, and methylation that can impact your wellness and risk of chronic disease. In addition, we look at the genes related to fitness (like muscle strength and oxygen uptake) as well as mental wellness (including concussion, depression, and Alzheimer’s.)

How does the testing work?

All it takes is a simple home cheek swab, mail it back and it is processed at our CLIA certified Canadian lab. Results are emailed to you in an easy to read report in 3-4 weeks. We include a personalized phone nutrition consult with the full testing.

How could this help?

By knowing where you are genetically weak, you can take actions through diet, exercise and lifestyle to support your body better. By learning a few simple changes that are right for your body, many people experience:

  • Weight loss
  • Increased energy
  • Reduced digestion issues
  • Improved supplementation
  • Insight into health issues
